Various sub-domains in civil engg where job-seekers can find job .
For Civil / Structural engineering fresher graduates.
In the current job market or scenario, It is especially needed that one knows what
are different job profiles (departments or Type of works) where one can find a
job in the Civil Engineering field.
The Various types of Job profiles are:
1. Site supervision.
2. Project Management.
3. Design
4.Architecture/Interior Design/3D modelling.
5. Quality control.
6. Drafting.
7. Estimation or Bill of Quantities.
(There may be other departments/profiles too, I'll be updating as I remember.)
Now all of these different types of job profiles/departments will be there in
most of the Companies. It's not only that one must know these but also very
important to know what are the works needed to be known in all these particular
profiles. Having knowledge of a couple of above-mentioned job profiles will
help you land a job.
Briefly here, I'll be stating what all type of work is done in above mentioned
profiles.
1.Site Supervision: Supervising all the Construction related Activities on-site like Concreting, formwork, shoring, Procuring, and maintenance of materials
& overlooking all the Construction Activities as per drawings.
2.Project Management: Work involves keeping a Track of the Events
in Construction. Also deals with Scheduling of various activities involved in a
project and its sequence like which activity is to be started first and flowed up
by other activities in a construction project. Soft wares used in this are
Microsoft Project (MSP), Primavera, etc.
3.Design: Involves analyzing a structure upon subjecting to
loads and design it accordingly. Popular Software’s used in this are ETABS,
Staad Pro, SAP, SAFE, RCDC, and many more. Each software has its own specialty
and hence the Use. One should know At least a couple among these soft wares.
4.Architecture/Interior Designing/3D rendering: Work
essentially involves the preparation of plans, elevations, and sections of the structure
which is to be built on-site. 3D modeling of the structure is also given to the client as per requirement. Requires knowledge of Vaastu, building codes norms, and bye-laws and positioning of various rooms in a building or structure. Also
keeping in mind structure Aesthetics. Softwares used are Revit, 3DS Max, and
others.
5.Quality Control:
Deals with maintaining of quality of the work done & also making sure
whether the design is in accordance with the drawings and respective code clauses. Like assessing the quality and strength of concrete by concrete cube testing,
Aggregates testing and conducting tests of various samples as per IS code
procedures etc.
(Structural engineering graduates kindly take Note. Quality
checking is also being done after Construction which is called as
Non-destructive Testing. For Master's or Post graduation in structures, there
is a lab Dedicated solely for Non-destructive testing in the first year itself.
Hence graduates from structures can also have a career in NDT provided you have
good knowledge on procedures of how to conduct these tests and the interpretation of their results.)
6) Drafting: Work involves the preparation of drawings based on
outputs given by a structural engineer or designer. Good knowledge of AutoCAD,
Draft sight or any other CAD drafting software is required. One must know to
work with sections, elevations, and able to understand these thoroughly.
7) QS & Estimation: Work
involves getting the quantities of various materials or items that will be used
in a construction project. One should be knowing how to work out quantities of
building works (brickwork, painting, plastering, etc.), roadwork, drain
works, etc. Just having a basic idea about the schedule of rates (SOR) is enough.
No specialized training is required for this. Just one universal book that is
good enough for almost everything is of B.N Dutta ( which is called as the bible
for QS and Estimation) and which is already been studied in our Engineering)
These were a few domains that I listed. there are many other domains too. will talk about rest in some other blog. Stay tuned for Upcoming blogs.
